How To Care For Your Silk Lingerie (And What To Avoid)

We understand that shopping for quality silkwear and lingerie is a big investment, which means you’ll want to keep your pieces in pristine condition for many years to come. Maintaining your lingerie also helps limit overconsumption and the consistent repurchasing of garments - so consider looking after your silk a win for your bank account and the environment. Caring for our silkwear takes a little more effort than traditional underwear, but this comprehensive guide should streamline your wash routine, as well as give you tips on everything to avoid.

Why does silk require special care?

Silk is a material made from natural fibres, which give it the soft, luxurious feel we know and love. This also means, however, the material can be delicate and especially sensitive to damage from chemicals and rough everyday wear. With this in mind, our recommendation at Ayten Gasson is always to handwash your silk items. It’s time-consuming yes, but it guarantees your garments will remain in the best possible condition.

A guide to washing silk lingerie

  1. Handwash with care

So, why can’t you add your silk garments to the washing machine with your other intimates? We really advise against doing so, as not only are standard detergents too strong for the material but you’re also more prone to snagging, pulling or even tearing mid-cycle.

Instead, handwash using a gentle, mild soap or specialised silk wash, this is an additional investment, but one worthwhile if you’re caring for multiple silkwear pieces. Cleanse your garments in a basin or sink of lukewarm water - very hot water can damage silk fibres. Massage in your wash of choice and then submerge your lingerie and allow it to soak and release dirt for a few minutes.

  1. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry

To ensure that all soap residue is cleansed, run your pieces under a cool tap, being careful not to pull or twist the material when wet. Make sure not to twist or ring out your silk lingerie to squeeze out water, instead press them between a soft towel. Allow each piece to air dry flat in a cool, shaded area or room. Avoid placing silk in or near direct sunlight as this can fade colours and weaken the material’s natural fibres.

What to AVOID when caring for silk

  • Washing machines and tumble dryers: while we advise against washing machines, we positively forbid you to put your silkwear through a tumble dryer! Not only will this damage your silk, but it will also ruin any adornments on your lingerie, like our intricate lace detailing. Any elastic trims will also weaken and loosen from the heat of the dryer, so trust us, it’s not worth it - just let your garments air dry.
  • Standard ironing: silk can be ironed, but precautions need to be taken to avoid heat damage to the natural material. Make sure to switch your iron to the silk setting and place a clean pillowcase over the silk to avoid direct contact with the iron.
  • Storage in plastic containers: silk is particularly susceptible to mildew and mould as a natural fibre, so avoid storing your pieces in airtight containers or storage. Instead, keep your lingerie in a breathable fabric bag, box or drawer.
  • Spot cleaning with water: avoid the temptation of dabbing a mark on your silk with water, this will only leave a bigger stain. Either follow the handwash process above or for oil stains, apply a little talcum powder to remove. If you ever have a stain you aren’t quite sure how to tackle, reach out to us at info@aytengasson.com and we’ll do our best to advise.
  • Being rough: although strong, silk is susceptible to greater wear when handled roughly. Try to be mindful when wearing your lingerie not to pull and yank the material too vigorously.
  • Be mindful when wearing perfume and body lotions: allow your skin to completely dry down after applying perfume or body cream before putting on silk lingerie. This avoids placing the material in contact with chemicals that can fade the fabric and oils that could cause stains.
